Behind the Build: A Dream Studio for Chasing Cars

What do you get when one of Australia’s most respected automotive video publishers asks for a studio big enough to fit an SUV — and cinematic enough to shoot a Lexus commercial? You get one epic challenge. And we were here for it.

From Carpark to Creative Engine

When the Chasing Cars team approached us, they had a vision: transform a warehouse space into a high-performance production studio built specifically for shooting cars. Not just filming them — showcasing them. Clean light. Full RGB control. The ability to go from minimalist white to full-throttle colour in seconds.

We knew this wasn’t your average studio fit-out. This was about performance, precision, and scale.

The Cyclorama That Could

At the heart of the studio is a 10m x 8m U-shaped white cyclorama — built deep and wide enough to comfortably shoot full vehicles with room to move around them. No corners. No hard shadows. Just a clean, continuous visual space that works as well for editorial as it does for commercial content.

Light Like a Cinematographer’s Playground

Lighting is where things got really exciting. We installed a 6m x 8m overhead softbox, custom-built to cast even, natural light from above — perfect for car bodies and detail shots. Then we added DMX-controlled RGB wall lighting, giving the team instant mood changes and creative flexibility at the touch of a fader.

“We’d love the ability to throw a clean, soft light from above, but still be able to punch in some colour or edge light on demand,” they told us. So that’s exactly what we built.

Working Around the Wheels

Chasing Cars were filming content even before the final lighting install was complete — so we worked live, on-site, and around the clock to keep their production schedule humming.
